Heirloom variety from the early 1800s grown for the internal "hearts" of the deep green edible flower buds. Plants will produce up to 5 buds in the first year best harvested at 3-5" in diameter. If allowed to bloom, flowers are purple resembling a thistle flower with a lovely fragrance. Long arching silvery green leaves that are deeply lobed and serrated add beautiful height and texture to the edible garden.
Artichokes are tender perennials that prefer well-drained soils and need space to reach mature size.
