Comfrey

Symphytum officinale

Brought to America in the 1600s for its medicinal purposes, this perennial has a long history in herb gardens. Its long ovate, hairy leaves add great texture to the garden and has lovely violet-purple bell-shape blooms appear in hanging clusters in early summer.

Comfrey is highly adaptable to a wide range of soils, but generally prefers moist, well-draining soil and appreciates a break from hot afternoon sun.
