Inula helenium

Tall perennial herb noted for its broad leaves, sunflower like blooms, and rhizomes that have long been used both medicinally and for flavoring.

Towering at 6 feet when in in bloom, Elecampane stands out in cottage gardens and perennial borders for its stature. Bright yellow blooms appear in July that continue through September. The dark green hairy foliage is impressive with basal leaves reaching 1-2 feet in length. Historically, the rhizomes were used medicinally and they continue to be used for their unique flavor.
