Acanthus mollis (Bear’s Breeches)

Commonly known as Bear’s Breeches, is an architectural Mediterranean perennial with large, deeply lobed, glossy green leaves forming a dense basal rosette. In mid to late summer, tall upright spikes emerge, bearing white, hooded flowers beneath purplish bracts. Slow to establish, it rewards patience with a dramatic, sculptural presence and historic interest — its foliage inspired the design of Corinthian column capitals. Thrives in full sun to part shade with well-drained soil.
