Andropogon gerardii ‘Blackhawks’ (Big Bluestem)

Gorgeous selection with dark purple foliage in summer that deepens into fall. Introduced by Brent Horvath of Intrinsic Perennials. A. gerardii is a tall clump forming grass native to the prairies of the Midwest and Great Plains. In late summer flowers emerge on branched inflorescences that resemble turkey’s feet, leading to its other common name “Turkeyfoot Grass,” Deep roots make it drought tolerant once established.
