Alpine type saxifrage forming low, evergreen rosettes of scalloped leaves, topped in spring by wiry stems carrying numerous small purple to reddish flowers. Ideal for rock crevices, troughs, and the front of cool, moist rock gardens where it can be admired up close. Prefers partial sun in cool climates or bright shade in warmer regions, along with moist, sharply drained, humus-rich soil.
