Brilliant yellow sunflower-like blooms 5" across emerge along the upper portions of tall sturdy flowering stalks. Basal foliage is large and leaves get smaller further up the top. Height 5-9'.
Silphium attracts birds, bees, and butterflies to the garden. Prefers average, dry to medium well drained soil. Drought tolerate when established. Tolerates poor soils. North Americans used the gummy, bitter resin from broken stems as a mouth cleaning chewing gum.
